Tastrek started out as an echo on a local BBS back in 1993, with Richard being the founding member and moderator for it. The echo didn’t really pick up until about the middle of 1994 when a few soon-to-be regulars appeared.
In October/November of 1994 some of the regulars arranged to meet to see the faces behind the messages being sent. In late December 1994, the very first TasTrek BBQ/Video night occurred. It was a great success, even if there wasn’t anything which we could call organisation behind it.
The very first glimpses of Babylon 5 were shown at this event. After this first TasTrek BBQ, other BBQs were being held close to one every month or so, with the videos being shown as soon as everyone had finished stuffing themselves.
When winter came around, TasTrek pizza nights started, with everyone throwing in five bucks or so for the pizzas.
At some stage in the proceedings Richard decided we should go on a weekend drive to Strathgordon in the very south-west of Tasmania (as he worked for Telstra he had ‘access’ to areas not normally available to the public).
Thus began the start of the Tas Treks which basically meant driving, camping, bushwalking, heaving, wheezing and generally dragging our sorry asses to very remote, very beautiful and scenic places.
The trips started as day drives, progressed to day walks, and have now incorporated overnight walks and camping in tents. And technically now that two separate members have been to the same area in Canada (Ontario), it can be said we’ve actually mounted an overseas Tas Trek! Wow! We’ve even done a Trek to Melbourne.
Our treks have now progressed to a semi-legendary status - what used to be over night stays, are now multi-night campouts, involving cabins, tents, fishing, drinking, card playing - all the usual things you do on a wild camping trek.
We all have a wide range of camping gear - no-one suffers from lack of equipment anyway. We do try the odd fishing here and there depending on the location (sometime with good results, sometimes not)
The actual Trek video nights have tapered off somewhat as little baby Sienna has arrived - but we still have them, usually involving a BBQ and packing our gear on a Thursday night in preparation for a weekends camping.
The summer of 2005 saw us preparing for a long, long weekend at Binalong Bay on Tasmanias east coast. It was very successful - in fact so successful, we had our very first Winter Trek in the same place.
Starting in 2005 was our “Round the Compass” trip - 4 treks to all 4 points of the compass:
Only the centre remains - Waddamana or Lake St Claire maybe!
As of yet we haven’t finalised our decisions on which one to visit but I think we’re gonna have fun no matter what destinations await…
